If you're starting a business or personal brand from the ground up, I know how overwhelming it can feel to figure out where to begin. Someone recently asked me, "If you had to start over, what would you focus on first?"

Here’s what I told them—three steps that don’t cost much, but make a massive difference. These are the things I wish I had done sooner and the exact steps I’d follow if I were starting from scratch today.

1. Post Consistently on Social Media

The very first thing I’d do is start posting on social media consistently. It’s something I’ve struggled with myself and continue to work on—but it’s powerful.

No one will know what you’re doing or how you can help them unless you show up. Whether it’s LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram, I’d use my network and let people in on the journey.

If you’re not sure what to post, here’s what’s worked for me:

  • Behind-the-scenes updates
  • Quick tips related to your industry
  • Client success stories
  • Projects or progress I’m making

It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being visible and real.

2. Build a Website

Once I started gaining traction through social, the next thing I’d focus on is getting a simple website live. Not perfect. Just live.

I’d grab a domain, set up a basic homepage with who I am, what I do, and how people can get in touch. I’d include a service page or two, maybe even a blog if I had time—but mostly, I’d focus on making sure I had a solid digital home base.

Your website gives people a place to go after they hear about you. It builds trust and lets you control the narrative.

3. Start SEO Right Away

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is something I wish I had prioritized earlier. It’s not instant, and it takes a lot of time—but it’s one of the most sustainable ways to grow online.

Even doing a few basics in the beginning—like writing helpful content, making sure your titles and descriptions are optimized, and claiming your Google Business Profile—can make a big impact down the road.

SEO doesn’t have to be fancy at first. But if I were starting from scratch, I’d get the ball rolling as soon as possible.

Laying a Foundation That Lasts

So if I had to start all over again, these are the three things I’d focus on first:

  1. Consistently showing up on social media
  2. Building a simple, clean website
  3. Laying the groundwork for SEO

They’re not flashy. They’re not instant wins. But they’re foundational—and they work.

If you’re at the starting line and need help getting traction, that’s exactly what I do at Weber Strategic Solutions. I work with businesses to get their websites launched, build out strong SEO, and show up online with clarity and confidence.
